Snowbison, Derek Wiedman

Snowbison, Derek Wiedman

Signature

with Derek Weidman

In taking this course we will approach the lathe with a more experimental and sculptural eye. The lathe is at its heart a very powerful contemporary carving machine and in this class we hope to begin to unlock it. Students can expect a variety of new techniques, but the primary emphasis will be multi-axis shaping with secondary focuses on power tools such as angle grinders, rotary carvers, chainsaws and finishing with pyrography and paint. The rules of the class are simple:

Break them, but be safe about it. Or to put another way, do stupid things in the smartest way you can devise.

Day One: Multi axis head, this is a form I started with and it is good for understanding interrupted cuts, the relationships that one cut has to another, and the naturally occuring abstractions created by using a wood lathe to document anatomy. It helps get ones mind around what it is like to carve with arcs and circles

Day two: the hard day, this day students will choose an animal (or other ‘thing’) and try to capture its likeness with the lathe. Frustrations will yield insights as the day progresses. There are no rights or wrongs just interesting paths to discover. Power tools will be used to potentially help assist creating the form.

Day three: Armed now with the insights of the day before the students will either continue down the path they started on the same piece or ideally start a new in an iterative way. The second one is always better, or at least better informed. Some emphasis on textures, with chainsaws and general carving.

Day four: the last day is often a creative explosive, idea begin manifesting in many different directions, as well as finishing and painting begin bringing the objects to life.
