Green wood course

with Yann MAROT, woodturner

Turning green wood means that we share a relation with the tree, its sap and its bark. We first have to understand the way he has grown to imagine how to saw it up and to anticipate the distortions during turning and drying. What a pleasure to play with the grain, the patterns and the hot colors of the wood.
With few specific tools for hollowing (ring, hook, scraper) and the bowl gouge sharpened with a long bevel, long shavings will fly in the workshop and all of it without any dust. Emphasis will be placed on sharpening to reduce sanding. And whatever, we will see that sanding green wood is not more difficult than dry wood with specific trips.
Exercises: salad bowl, bowl, natural edge bowl, vase, lampshade, tiny opening hollowing, glass with a long and fine foot.

Dates

From July 21th to 24th 2020.

Hollowing and better cut techniques

with Yann MAROT, woodturner

Rope the bevel that’s good, slicing on wood it’s better!
From different tools, we will take the time to understand why the tool is cuting (or not… sometimes).
The emphasis will be placed on the use of the slicing angle (why the skew is giving such a good result and how to get the same cut with other tools). We will spend a lot of time for sharpening to reduce sanding. A good cut will also enable us to turn thinner by reducing the pression on wood.
The course is based on practical exercises: spindle turning, hollowing end grain and across the grain, tiny opening hollowing.
Exercises: spatula, bowl, raindrop box with inlay ring, frame, flavour spoon, maracas…

Dates

– from April 14th to 17th 2020,
– from May 12th to 15th 2020,
